Spring
Mountains
Clark County, Nevada Tom

The Spring Mountains, less than an hour outside Las Vegas, are largely
overlooked by the millions of visitors to southern Nevada.
Some friends and I
rented a Jeep and drove to Red Rock Canyon. We drove from the desert floor
to well over 6,500 feet, surrounded on all sides by 8,500ft-10,500ft peaks.
Joshua Trees and cactus gave way to Ponderosa pines, and a fresh powdering
of snow.
Alpine, not what comes
to mind when most people think of Southern Nevada.
Weather in Vegas was
almost 70, when our offroad only trail peaked out, the weather was in
the upper 30's.
NOTE:
The Spring Mountains are home to one of Nevada's most spectacular mountain
peaks, Charleston Peak.
This range is so
close to Las Vegas, yet so different from the surrounding landscape. Las
Vegas, in and of itself, is a modern marvel of man-made artifice--an entirely
unnatural occurence in an otherwise hot, desolate wasteland. We recommend
to all Las Vegas tourists to get out of the Casinos for a day and see
some of the spectacular nearby scenery compliments of Mother Nature
