After a several
half-hearted attempts on our frequent drives between Cedar City and
Alpine, we were finally able to find Meadow Hot Springs.
Apparently the
new owner of the springs has been working hard to make it more accessible
to the public. There is a new fence with an open gate followed by
a ¼ mile rock-lined pathway to the main pool, which is filled with
crystal clear water bubbling up from a seemingly bottomless hole.
The water is warm
enough to keep you comfortable in the winter, but cool enough to jump
into without burning yourself. I've been told that many people scuba
dive in the depths of the cave at the bottom of the pool, and a few
have returned floating face down after hitting their head and drowning.
Use caution if
you bring children. Without scuba gear there's no way you could save
them if they sank into the black hole.
Because Meadow
Hot Springs is so close to the Interstate it is an ideal way to break
up a long drive. Keep in mind though; this is private property. If
you decide to leave your trash and make it undesirable, the owners
could easily post "no trespassing" signs and you could ruin
it for everyone. Because of our fear of attracting too many visitors,
we will not be posting directions to this site.
