The
Maggie Summit Road goes from near Mountain City to the Bull Run Reservoir
and then down into the vast Owyhee Desert. Every mile of this road
is breathtaking. In the late spring, the greenery will amaze you.
Ranches on the lower end are kept lush by Trail Creek, which flows
off the Bull Run Mountains into the South Fork Owyhee River past Mountain
City.
This
road is well worth a sightseeing drive. It begins about four miles
south of Mountain City on highway 225 and goes southwest through the
Bull Runs. If you're ambitious, a hike to the privately-owned Bull
Run Reservoir is rumored to be quite rewarding. We weren't ambitious
enough to make the trek, but have read that the reservoir, owned by
the massive IL Ranch, contains large rainbow trout. IL Ranch has worked
with the Nevada DWR to allow fishermen into the area under strict
conditions--one of them being no motor vehicle travel.
