Kelton
Box Elder County, Utah

Kelton was built along the original transcontinental railroad grade and quickly became a sizable community in the old west, complete with saloons, horse thieves and other outlaws. Many of the town's original residents were Chinese railroad workers.

In its heyday, Kelton was a major hub for travelers, with stage coaches leaving daily to places like Boise and Walla Walla. These stage coaches attracted numerous outlaws to the region and gave Kelton a reputation as a lawless community.

An excellent page about Kelton is available here http://www.prospector-utah.com/kelton.htm

The graveyard is the only remaining indication of life here. In 1934 the town's population had begun to shrink. Utah's largest recorded earthquake was the beginning of the end of Kelton. Parts of this basin sunk as much as twenty feet.

By 1939 very few trains were using the rails through Kelton . Construction on the Lucin cutoff was complete and was carrying people and goods directly across the Great Salt Lake on a wooden trestle, diverting railroad traffic to some 70 miles south of Kelton.
