Green Creek
Mono County, California
The Eastern Sierra
Jim Drysdale

Green Creek is located south of Bridgeprt, CA

"This being "east" as in draining into the Great Basin qualifies these shots for desertislands.org..."

So I camped along Green Creek with the intent of flyfishing/hiking/photography. What I really got more than anything was a merciless attack by mosquitoes. The shot above is where I hooked a monster rainbow trout that LDR'd (long distance release - i.e., broke off). If you'd have stumbled upon me during that precise moment you would have been greeted with the wide-eyed gaze of someone that just saw Bigfoot or was just dropped back to mother earth. Needless to say this is no "fish story", rather quite simply the largest trout (I think) that I have ever hooked on a fly.

This pic is from the western Sierra foothills (i.e., the Mokelumne River). Even some of the relatively close areas on this side of the Sierras take upwards of 1-2 hrs because the roads tend to take you up the ridges as opposed to winding along the canyon bottoms. So when you get to the turnoff you are way above and you must then drive DOWN several thousand feet to get to the water (thats the case here). Point being brakes need to be in working order or you'll end up somewhere upside-down in the trees.

Also, for California, there exists a surprising amount of the redneck species in places such as this. You can easily spot them on account of their propensity for bait slinging, fish beaching, gill grabbing, and sometimes unconscionable poaching tendencies. Never mind catch and release with this lot... Sometimes you can even spot them stalking the California Fish and Wildlife stock trucks (filled with hatchery raised trout). They simply follow the trucks around so that the fish can be caught immediately upon being released. Side note: When discussing fishing we (admittedly sometimes) snooty flyfishermen are always looking for and speaking of in terms of "the hatch" (i.e., Hex hatch, Baetis hatch, Salmonfly hatch, etc.). Well the funny thing is this form of subhumanity is often reffered to as "The Bubba Hatch" . Others aren't so kind as they just lump them into the category of "toothless freaks" . Enjoy!
