Currie
Elko County, Nevada
The advent of the
copper mining industry in eastern Nevada led to the building of of a
rail line from Ely in the south, to Montello in the north. The town
of Currie came into existence as its importance as a mid-way stop for
freight increased with the mining activity. As Currie grew to boast
a general store and a few hundred residents, the nation was beginning
its love affair with automobiles. By the late 1930's, road projects
had been completed, and mining activity was slowing. Hence, Currie's
size and importance began to diminish.

Today, Currie is
inhabited by a handful of residents. Motorists can still stop into the
general store for a cold Pepsi, but not much else is available here.
Like many other old Nevada roadside stops, this one is a step back in
time--worth a visit.
