Currant
Mountain
White Pine and Nye Counties, Nevada
A scenic detour along the White River
We spotted a blue
line on our Nevada topo map indicating the possiblity of a sizeable
stream flowing out of the White Pine Mountian Range southwest of Ely.
Such lines on any Nevada map, we usually greet with guarded optimism,
particularly at the end of a very dry season. The White River, we had
read, was a place where one might be able to catch a few trout.

The blue line did,
indeed, mark the location of a stream that, by Nevada standards, was
significant. A short drive up a graded road toward the White River Campground
(Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest) revealed a number of potentially
lucrative fishing locations, but for te lack of water in the channel.
Five years of drought have plagued much of the Great Basin, leaving
streamflows and trout populations minimal, at best.
What did get our
attention, however, was the view from the base of Currant Mountain.
Unprepared for a serious outdoor adventure, we admired from afar the
majesty of this range and agreed to a future visit, perhaps after recovery
from the drought. Below are a few images from the White River CG road.
