Cherry Creek
White Pine County, Nevada

At the base of the Cherry Creek Range, about 40 miles north of Ely, is the tiny community of Cherry Creek. Once White Pine County's largest community (with 6,000 people), Cherry Creek was an important center for the mining industry. The town still has 50 or so permanent residents, a general store, and an open-air post office with an old freezer as a depository for parcels.

The "Post Office"

The charm of these forgotten little places is unlike what you'd find in any larger city. The person who appears to be sleeping in the above photo is Sue, one of the proprietors of the cherry creek barrel saloon--the only local store. At the time, we thought Sue was having a Sunday nap, but later learned that she spends the more quiet moments reading in the sunlight. We always enjoy visitng little shops like these. They are rapidly disappearing. You won't find fancy cheese-dispensing machines for your hot dogs or nacho chips, but you are sure to find a cold beer or soda, and a rare opportunity to go back in time to when life was simpler and people were nicer (thanks for the insight, Mert).
