Ryan and I finally
had time to get off the freeway at Wells and drive up into the East
Humboldts to take a look at Angel Lake. After a twelve-mile drive
up the winding road, our eyes were treated to a beautiful sight--quaking
aspens just beginning to change color, a spectacular mountaintop,
and a peaceful, clear lake in a small alpine valley. Many, ourselves
included, have passed through Wells on I-80 repeatedly, never dreaming
something so beautiful and un-desert-like was so close. I recommend
to anyone looking for a change of scenery, or for proof that Nevada
is so much more than a dry sagebrush desert, that they take the extra
time to visit this peaceful spot.
Angel Lake is
a Nevada State Recreation Area, hence the amenities such as pavement,
parking, toilets, and picnic facilities are plentiful. Although amenities
aren't really our style, we could appreciate the fact that such a
lovely place was made accessible to to the masses. Any vehicle will
get you there and back, and it is within reasonable distance from
Elko, Wendover, and Salt Lake City (if you leave early enough).
The drive up the
eastern slope of the spectacular East Humboldts is, in itself a sight
for sore eyes. The vistas are incredible! But don't drive too close
to the edge.
